This weeks product focus looks at a unique feature within MCrew: optimizing crew base switches.
Balancing crew numbers across bases is a challenge faced by many airlines. It’s a complex puzzle — shaped by the daily flying programme, individual crew qualifications, contractual constraints, and more.
When the balance isn’t quite right, the costs add up quickly. Positioning crew from other bases to operate flights may solve the short-term issue, but it’s rarely the most efficient solution.
At Motulus, we’ve developed the capability to optimise base switches directly within the optimisation engine. Where airline agreements allow crew mobility between bases, the Motulus algorithm determines the best timing for these moves as part of roster generation.
This can be fully voluntary — for example, limited to crew who opt in to move to a specific base — and can even protect dedicated time off within the roster to facilitate the transition.
The result? Greater planning flexibility and a smarter way to align crew supply with flying demand — especially when base staffing levels don’t perfectly match the programme.
