As a crew planner, have you ever wondered which pre-assignments are getting in the way of building your best possible roster?

Pre-assignments are duties that sit on a crew member’s roster before the actual roster build begins. Some of these are completely fixed — like vacation — but others, such as training, meetings, or certain ground duties, often have some flexibility. The problem? Most rostering optimizers treat all pre-assignments as immovable, even when they don’t have to be.

To help with this, Motulus has developed a new optimisation mode called Flex Assignments.

Flex Assignments still creates workable rosters and ensures all flying is covered, but it also highlights which specific pre-assignments — on which crew members — are making it hardest to build an optimal plan. While it won’t flag things that truly can’t move (like vacation), it does focus on selected duty codes where adjustments might be possible.

The result? Crew planners get clear insight into which changes could make a real difference before running the main roster optimisation. It’s an innovative way to remove hidden constraints and give planners more control over the final outcome.
