One of the questions airlines consider when reviewing software selection is ‘will this technology fit into our ecosystem?’ This article explores the promise and challenges of seamless integration in industries, focusing on how the concept often falls short of expectations; and explore Motulus’ commitment to overcoming these challenges and unlocking maximum value for its clients.
The simple touch of a button. ‘It will be seamless’. Data will transfer with speed and efficiency between systems. Data will flow on demand. The execution will be in milliseconds.
That is the promise.
The benefits of integrated solutions, a one stop shop for all, sound amazing on paper. Integration as a concept is sold across many industries. A builder will arrange all the sub contractors for you – you do not need to organise different tradespeople. Streaming services provide all the entertainment you need on one account. All the needs of the family are catered for. The car dealer will sell you not just a car but also provide insurance, breakdown cover and servicing.
Unfortunately when the hood is lifted (excuse the pun) the package isn’t quite as good as you’d hoped for. The builder may contract the electrician, but he doesn’t talk to him and the electrician always does what he wants anyway. The streaming service offers half the sports, family films, and drama that you would like to watch, so you need to subscribe to another service. You discover the breakdown cover bundled into the package your car dealer sold you is actually outsourced to the same provider you were using previously (but now you pay a higher price).
The same premise of one stop shop integration is also true in software companies. There are many vendors that provide a full range of products and offer seamless data integration. It’s a challenge presented to Motulus on a regular basis.
Airlines and airports will say to us:
.…. but ..… do you also offer product x or product y, upstream or downstream in the planning process from the area of Motulus’ expertise, because we, the airline, are worried about integration. This is sometimes the question we are asked.
Data flows everywhere. In every course of business and domestic life, data transfers into and out of different systems. The technology platforms today, inside and outside of aviation, have matured to enable the rapid and consistent exchange of data. Protocols are standardised and increasingly open source, and the rise of cloud computing makes transition easier and cheaper. Expertise amongst the developer community continues to grow in this field, and references and guides also support new entrants to the area.
This opens up a new world of opportunities for airlines to select best of breed suppliers. They have much more opportunity to build ecosystems with a range of products from different vendors. If suppliers see data integration with 3rd parties as a challenge, they risk obsolescence. This creates an environment for airlines to seek partners that can add the maximum value at all stages of their business processes.
At Motulus we have intentionally grown expertise in data integration. Our core competency is optimization but we ensure that for any airline plugging into our software, the experience is as seamless as it can be. Consequently we see understanding, and delivering data integration, as a key part of our capability and will strive to be at the forefront of this skillset. We firmly believe that in today’s world data integration and data flows should not be an obstacle to buying the best.
